Hey commenters,
Last Saturday we did an episode about third-party voting and vote shaming with Alex Mohajer. Alex is an extremely accomplished political writer, commentator and activist. He also has his own show on Happs News called The AM Report that just hit 500,000 views! Congrats Alex!
With Alex, we spoke about this viral video. It brought up a lot of different topics: third-party voting, voter shaming, disenfranchisement etc.
Here were the comments we covered:
Here are some key takeaways from this episode:
The United States has more than two parties. It’s not that third party voting or independent votes don’t count, it’s that the electoral college makes it so that it won’t be a vote for a viable candidate.
When you’re voting third party at the presidential level, at this point, you’re casting a protest vote, because it won’t be for a viable candidate. If the electoral college wasn’t there, we could see more dedication towards fostering other candidates and other parties in the United States. Until then, only the top two parties are viable.
In this instance, it’s more important for us to focus on voter suppression, (Alex isn’t worried about this particular son being discouraged by his mom) there is much more severe disenfranchisement happening on a larger scale in many states.
Thanks, Alex for joining us! Find him on Twitter. And watch his show The AM Report.
Tomorrow we’ll be joined by CBC Sports Reporter and multimedia journalist Jacky Doorey.
We’ll be discussing this TikTok and the following comments about it:
Tune in to hear our questions for Jacky and her insight on women’s sports and fair compensation. If you haven’t already, be sure to follow me on Happs or watch live on my Twitter, Youtube and Facebook (I also post every episode to my IGTV after airing).
Thank you for your support and see you soon,
